McLaren Health Care Launches
AI-Powered Cardiac Screening

April 15, 2026 · Cardiovascular Consultants

McLaren Health Care has partnered with Bunkerhill Health to launch a first-of-its-kind cardiovascular screening program in Michigan. By utilizing AI technology, the system identifies early signs of heart disease in patients using data from routine chest CT scans already on file.

Key Highlights of the Program

  • AI-Driven Detection: The program uses the Carebricks platform and FDA-cleared algorithms to identify incidental coronary artery calcium (iCAC) and aortic valve calcium (iAVC) from scans originally performed for other reasons, such as lung cancer screenings or infections.
  • Early Intervention: This technology allows clinicians to catch heart disease and aortic stenosis before symptoms appear, bypassing the need for specialized, time-consuming cardiac imaging.
  • Efficiency for Clinicians: The AI handles chart reviews and determines patient eligibility for follow-up based on clinical guidelines, reducing the administrative burden on medical staff.
  • National Leadership: McLaren is one of only five health systems in the U.S. — joining the likes of Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic — to deploy AI-powered aortic valve calcium detection.

Impact and Reach

"By using the clinical information already available to us, this program enables us to identify patients who may benefit from earlier follow-up… helping to close critical gaps in detection." — Dr. Samer Kazziha, Chief Medical Director, McLaren Heart & Vascular Institute

Based in Grand Blanc, Michigan, McLaren Health Care operates 12 hospitals and a large network of providers. This initiative aims to combat heart disease — the leading cause of death — by turning existing clinical data into actionable preventive care.
