When it comes to your heart health, getting a clear and complete picture is essential. You may be familiar with tests like an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) or a stress test. But sometimes, your cardiologist needs an even more detailed view. That's where a Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan comes in.
Think of a Cardiac MRI as a high-definition, multi-lens camera for your heart. It doesn't use radiation. Instead, it uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create incredibly detailed still and moving pictures of your heart's structure and function.
Why would my cardiologist recommend a Cardiac MRI?
A Cardiac MRI is a uniquely powerful tool because it provides a comprehensive assessment in one single test. It helps your consultant see not just how your heart is beating, but also what it's made of. We often use it to:
- Get a clear picture of heart function: MRI very accurately measures chamber size and wall thickness, and precisely calculates how much blood your heart pumps with each beat (the ejection fraction) — crucial for managing heart failure.
- Assess damage after a heart attack: MRI can distinguish scarred heart muscle from healthy, viable muscle — guiding decisions about treatments like stents or bypass surgery.
- Investigate heart muscle diseases: Conditions like dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can be intricately detailed, showing patterns of thickening, scarring, or inflammation other tests might miss.
- Evaluate heart valve problems: MRI provides additional information about the severity of a leaky or narrow valve and its impact on function.
- Look for inflammation or infection: Conditions like myocarditis or endocarditis can be clearly identified.
- Diagnose congenital heart disease: Excellent for visualizing complex anatomy, both before and after surgery.
- Check for rare conditions: It is the best test to look for cardiac tumors or cardiac amyloidosis, where abnormal proteins build up in the heart muscle.
What to expect during your scan
- Before: You'll change into a gown and our team will double-check for any metal implants or devices. It is critical to inform us if you have implanted devices (many modern pacemakers and ICDs are MRI-safe), metal clips, or if you are pregnant.
- During: You'll lie on a bed that slides into a short, wide tunnel. You'll need to lie very still and follow breathing instructions through a headset. The machine makes loud, rhythmic knocking sounds — we provide earplugs or headphones. In many cases, a contrast agent is injected to highlight blood flow and identify scar tissue. The scan typically takes 45 to 90 minutes, with our team monitoring you the whole time.
Is a Cardiac MRI safe?
Yes — Cardiac MRI is considered very safe for the vast majority of people. Unlike CT scans or X-rays, it does not use ionizing radiation. The contrast dye is different from the one used in CT scans and is less likely to cause allergic reactions or kidney problems; we review your kidney function beforehand.
How to prepare
There are usually very few restrictions — you can typically eat and take your medications as normal. The most important step is to leave metal at home and inform us about any implants.
