Dear Dr. Kazziha,

My sister, Diane Schuite, and I want to thank you for all the years of care our parents, Quindon and Mary Williams, received as your patients. Both of them lived long lives, despite health problems, due to your attentive care and determined pursuit of ways to address their various problems.

In the case of our father, he went through a period of time when he was having heart catheterizations and angioplasty every six months. It was clear you were convinced there was a problem based on his test results, but unable to find it. His account was that you developed a procedure with intravenous ultrasound that enabled you to find a “widow maker” blockage that was causing the problem. As a result, he received bypass surgery that solved the problem and undoubtedly saved his life. You were also the one that arranged that surgery very quickly with a fantastic surgeon.

For our mother, you found blockages and put in a long stretch of stents that functioned well for many years. When they became blocked by scar tissue, you helped restore some of her cardiac function by doing angioplasty.

Over the years, you truly treated our parents like they were your own. It is rare to find a doctor like you that combines both an amazing level of medical knowledge and technical ability with extraordinary care and compassion. We are blessed that you were our parents’ doctor enabling us to have them with us for a long time. Your advice and perspective were such a help in determining how to deal with our mother’s many conflicting medical problems at the end of her days.

Like you, your staff is also very caring and helped out in small ways, when we were late or had to reschedule an appointment, and large ways, when each of our parents’ ended up going to the emergency room from your office over the years.

We wish you all the best as you continue to help patients and their families manage their health in the best possible ways.

Sincerely,

Deborah Pranschke

Patient Prof. Dr. Achim Bonawitz – Testimonial

October 19, 2014
Dear Dr. Kazziha,
Exactly on this date two years ago my son Dietrich and the ambulance brought me to Crittenton Hospital with a severe heart attack, and my heart even stopped beating for some time. A whole team at the hospital worked for four days to help me survive this heart attack. I was especially lucky to have you come and insert a stent to open up a blocked coronary artery at that time, an action which made an eventual recovery possible. During one of my visits at your office a few months ago, I mentioned the philosophical thought that the purpose and meaning of life is what one makes it to be. On this basis I do not know any persons whose life is more meaningful than yours. Saving lives is one of the most important meaningful activities in this world. Your action on that October 19, 2012 and the subsequent insertion of two more stents in my heart made it possible for me to go on living with an extended expiration date. I feel a deep sense of gratitude first of all to you and also then to the other members of the Crittenton team for saving my life. And what an additional meaningful life I had: a life with family from wife to grandchildren, with friends, with lots of information about and occupation with languages, biology, cosmology, science in general, and classical music. So on this second anniversary of my “rebirth”, I want to express my “heartfelt” gratitude to you and the Crittenton team for making these extra two years possible. In the hope that perhaps some good years may follow, I am gratefully yours,
Achim Bonawitz

Patient George Thomes – Cardiovascular Patient

July 10, 2014

Dear Mr. Powell,

On January 7, 2014 my husband, George Thomas was exercising at the North Oakland YMCA when he suddenly collapsed on the treadmill.  At 71 years of age, George had been in great health his entire life, exercising regularly and running frequent races with his children and grandchildren. It was a great suppose to the entire family to hear that the reason for his collapse was cardiac arrests due to a 90% blockage in his left main artery.

George’s situation was very grave. He had lost consciousness for an unknown amount of time, and though open heart surgery was seemingly the only answer.  George’s condition was too fragile for such an overwhelming procedure. Despite an initial prediction that George would not recover from the cardiac arrest, the medical staff executed state of the art procedures to assist him. Under the guidance of Dr. Samer Kazziha, the team at Crittenton Hospital literally and physically brought my husband back to life.

Over the next nine days, we went from planning a funeral to celebrating George’s life. Through this very trying and emotional time, there were often more questions than answers and the nurses in the CICU were infinitely patient and supportive in helping us navigate this unknown territory. Not only did they go over and above in the day-to-day, full service care that is required in such intense medical situation, but they often held our hands and helped us through our tears.

Because of Dr. Kazziha and his amazing team, George literally came back to life at Crittenton. His recovery is nothing short of a miracle. George had the stent procedure to pen his left main artery and over the past 6 months, has once again resumed his exercise routine per the guidance of his doctors. On May 31, 2014 George ran in the annual Oak Apple Run with his children and grandchildren, resuming a 36-year tradition that just a few short months ago seemed to be impossible.

We acknowledge our gratitude to Dr. Kazziha and Crittenton Hospital whenever we share George’s story which we do often. Our subsequent visits with Dr. Kazziha solidify our faith in his amazing talents as a surgeon and an amazing human being. While we do not wish for anyone to have to go through what we have, we hope that people who find themselves in need for cardiac care find Dr. Kazziha. We hope they find the mazing and caring nurses at Crittenton Hospital. We hope they find the hope faith that we found in a hopeless situation.

Gratefully,

Darfene Thomes
